Every superhero has an origin story. For Freddy, it started with a comic book, a character named Spike Paine, and a belief that everyone — no matter who they are — deserves the chance to tell their story. Freddy is a creator, a dreamer, a sports fan, an animal lover, and a devoted family member. And in every role he plays, he brings the same quiet, unstoppable superpower: joy.
The Superhero Within
When Freddy picks up a pen, worlds come alive. As a participant in the Zero to Hero comic book project — born from the belief that every individual deserves to express themselves and explore their imagination — Freddy didn’t just participate. He created.
His character, Spike Paine, is no ordinary hero. A street punk caught in a chemical accident, Spike is transformed into a ghost goblin — equal parts mischief and mystery. Only Freddy could dream that up.
"I really liked this project because it was so fun!"

Freddy was recently celebrated for his creativity at a comic con-style comic book signing event, where fans lined up for his autograph. He signed copies with the ease of someone who has always known this was his moment.
A Passion for the Game
Ask Freddy about sports and watch his face light up. His favorite is tennis — he studies it on television, perfects his technique on video games, and holds a quiet, burning dream: to one day step onto a real court and play alongside the friends from his day program at CBS.
He’s also a die-hard Red Sox fan, and there’s nothing quite like a trip to the ballpark with his group to watch the Renegades play. The roar of the crowd, the crack of the bat, the shared excitement with friends — these are the moments that fill Freddy’s highlight reel.
He also looks forward every year to the CBS Annual Field Day — a celebration of movement, friendly competition, and the CBS community that means the world to him.
Love for Animals
Since joining CBS in 2023, Freddy has blossomed. “I love it here. It’s a very good program for me,” he says. What started in the day hab program has grown into something even more meaningful: a prevocational role volunteering at a stable with horses.
There, Freddy has found a particular friend in Bella, a gentle pony he is learning to clean and feed. When he talks about her, his expression brightens. “She kisses my hand,” he says. “I like helping out.”
A Heart for Family
For all his creative fire and competitive spirit, some of Freddy’s most cherished moments are the simplest. A trip to the Danbury Mall with his CBS group to shop for Christmas. Standing in a store, carefully choosing just the right gift for his aunt. Wrapping it up, knowing she’ll love it.
Thoughtfulness like that doesn’t announce itself. It just shows up — quietly, consistently, in the way Freddy moves through the world.
The Dream
Every hero has something they’re fighting for. For Freddy, the ultimate dream isn’t fame or fortune. It’s something far more human: a family of his own. A wife and children. A home where he is the husband, the dad — the one who shows up, every day, for the people he loves.
(A luxury condo wouldn’t hurt either.)
On his bucket list is to travel, specifically to Hollywood to meet celebrities, like Eddy Murphy. He also hopes to see some of the performers of the boy band, NSYNC, popular in the 1990s. He has treasured memories of seeing them on stage in 2000, with his mom.
It’s not that different from most people’s dreams. And that, perhaps, is the most powerful thing Freddy teaches us: that in every story we share about someone — there is a person who wants what we all want. To love and be loved. To belong. To matter.
Freddy joined CBS in 2023, and in that short time, he has created a superhero, befriended a pony, cheered from the bleachers, and grown into someone this community is proud to celebrate. This Down Syndrome Awareness month, we invite you to see what we see every day: a real-life hero, doing the extraordinary work of living a full, meaningful, joyful life.
