3 Tips for Summer Success & Safety!

At Community Based Services, we are dedicated to helping adults with disabilities achieve their dreams and discover themselves. As summer approaches, we want to ensure that everyone can enjoy the season safely and successfully. Here are some essential tips for making the most of your summer:
1) Water Safety
Water activities are a highlight of summer, but safety must always come first.
Supervision:
Always ensure constant supervision when near water. Whether it’s a pool, beach, or lake, having a responsible adult present can prevent accidents and provide immediate assistance if needed.
Floatation Devices:
Utilize floatation devices like life jackets and floaties. Make sure they are properly fitted and appropriate for the individual’s size and swimming ability.
Learn CPR:
Knowing CPR can save lives. Consider taking a CPR course if you haven’t already, so you’re prepared to respond in an emergency.
Swimming Lessons:
Swimming lessons can provide confidence and essential skills for water safety. Look for inclusive swimming programs that cater to individuals with disabilities.
2) Prepare Ahead for Long Car Rides/Plane Rides
Traveling can be stressful, but with a bit of preparation, it can be an enjoyable experience.
Know Your Route/Plan Ahead:
Familiarize yourself with your travel route and plan your journey ahead of time. This can help avoid unnecessary stress and ensure a smoother trip.
Schedule Breaks:
Regular breaks are important to stretch, use the restroom, and relax. Plan these stops into your travel schedule to maintain comfort and well-being.
Pack a Bag:
Bring along a well-stocked travel bag with snacks, drinks, a change of clothes, and any necessary medications. This can help manage hunger, thirst, and any unexpected situations.
Plan Entertainment:
Having entertainment options such as books, music, or games can make the journey more enjoyable. Choose activities that suit the preferences and needs of the individual.
Communicate with Your Child:
Set expectations and communicate clearly about the trip. Creating a social story can help children understand what to expect and reduce anxiety.
3) Self-Care
Taking care of oneself is crucial for enjoying the summer to its fullest.
Dress Appropriately:
Wear suitable clothing for the weather. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal for hot days, while layers can help adjust to changing temperatures.
Take Breaks:
Regular breaks are important to rest and recharge, especially during outdoor activities.
Hydrate:
Staying hydrated is essential. Encourage regular water intake to prevent dehydration.
Healthy Snacks:
Pack nutritious snacks to maintain energy levels throughout the day. Fruits, nuts, and yogurt are great options.
Monitor Own Well-Being:
Be mindful of how you’re feeling and take action if you need to rest, hydrate, or cool down. It’s important to listen to your body.
Monitor Weather Forecast:
Keep an eye on the weather forecast to plan activities accordingly. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather and have a plan in place for extreme conditions.
