The Fast Track to Support: How Self-Hire Through CBS

Finding the right staff for your child can sometimes feel like a waiting game. Self-Hire might be the perfect solution for your family.

Finding the right staff for your child can sometimes feel like a waiting game. If you are looking for the fastest way to get dedicated support into your home and community, Self-Hire might be the perfect solution for your family.

The Basics: Eligibility & Services

To utilize Self-Hire, your child must have OPWDD eligibility and be enrolled in the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver. Through Self-Hire, you can fast-track two vital services:

  • Community Habilitation (Com Hab): Staff works one-on-one with your child to build independent living skills, socialize, and explore the community.
  • Respite: Staff provides safe supervision, giving your child a fun break while giving you much-needed time to recharge.

Why It’s the Fastest Way to Get Staff

Traditional agency programs depend on an agency’s existing staffing pool, which often has a waiting list. With Self-Hire, you bypass the wait. If you find a great candidate, they can begin the onboarding process immediately. You gain complete control over who is in your home and when they work.

Where to Look for Great Staff

You don’t need to be a professional recruiter to find incredible people. Some of the best self-hire staff are already right in your neighborhood! Consider looking into:

  • College Job Boards: Local college students studying Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or Speech/Occupational Therapy are often eager for flexible, hands-on experience.
  • School Staff & Paraprofessionals: Teaching assistants, paras, or bus monitors at your child’s school often look for rewarding afternoon, weekend, or summer work.
  • Your Trusted Circle: Relatives, trusted neighbors, or family friends can often be hired as your staff (as long as they are not the child’s legal parents or guardians or live at the same address).

How CBS Supports Your Family
