In 1987, six years after CBS began offering services, President Ronald Reagan issued a public proclamation urging Americans to provide people with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”
While the decades since have been marked with activism and change furthering the rights of people with disabilities, there is still much work to be done. This work has been the focus of CBS’s passion for helping people with disabilities live fulfilling lives.
1 in 6 Children Has a Disability
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in six children in the U.S. have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. They include:
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Cerebral palsy
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
- Learning or intellectual disabilities
- Hearing loss
- Vision impairment
- Other developmental delays
#DDAM2023 Campaign: Beyond the Conversation
Each March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and its partners work together to create a social media campaign that highlights the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live. This year’s campaign is “Beyond the Conversation.” You are invited to be part of the campaign by using the following hashtags on social media: #DDawareness2023, #DDAM2023, #BeyondtheConvo or #BeyondtheConversation. Look for CBS on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as we go beyond the conversation.

Our noteworthy innovations include Cultivating Dreams Farm, supporting wellness, job skills training, nature connection and recreation; Hudson Valley InterArts expanding the place for inclusive arts; and Good Reasons Dog Treats Company, a social enterprise and inclusive workforce supporting job creation and a sense of purpose.
