Dreams Realized: Steven’s Journey to Meaningful Employment

For Steven, employment was never just about getting a job. It was about building a future.

Like many individuals who come to Community Based Services (CBS), Steven had aspirations of finding meaningful work where he could contribute, grow, and be valued. Through CBS’s Community-Based Prevocational Training Program and Supported Employment services, that vision became a reality—transforming a training opportunity into a paid position at Vista Lab.

Building the Foundation

Steven’s employment journey began with CBS’s Community-Based Prevocational Training Program, where participants develop the academic, social, and workplace skills needed to succeed in competitive employment settings. Through individualized coaching, hands-on learning experiences, and community-based work opportunities, participants gain both practical skills and confidence in their abilities.

One of those opportunities brought Steven to Vista Lab, where he joined a team responsible for packaging disposable pipettes used by healthcare, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical organizations around the world. What started as a training experience quickly revealed Steven’s strengths.

The work requires focus, consistency, and attention to detail—qualities Steven demonstrated from the very beginning. As he settled into the role, he found more than a task to complete. He found a workplace where he felt welcomed and respected.

I like to think I am good at this work," Steven shared. "It's a small, tight-knit company. Everyone here sends out a really good vibe. I hope this is what I end up doing. I feel I am heading in the right direction."

Turning Potential Into Opportunity

For many people, personal dreams and life goals begin with the belief that a fulfilling future is possible.

One of the core outcomes CBS strives to support is helping people identify and pursue their long-term aspirations while celebrating milestones along the way. Steven’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when a person’s goals are matched with the right opportunities and support.

As Steven continued to excel at Vista Lab, his contributions did not go unnoticed. His dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic demonstrated that he was more than ready for the next step.

That next step came through CBS’s Supported Employment program. After completing prevocational training, participants work with employment specialists to identify career goals, connect with employer partners, and secure competitive employment that aligns with their interests and strengths. Once hired, ongoing support from a job coach helps ensure long-term success and growth.

With support from CBS and the willingness of Vista Lab to invest in inclusive employment, Steven was offered a paid position.

Steven spoke about his journey toward supported employment at Vista Lab. Reflecting on that path, he shared, “I knew CBS would prepare me for success, and they did that from the very start. In every single life there are struggles. They will come and they will pass. But dream big and don’t give up.”

More Than a Paycheck

Meaningful work is about more than earning a wage. It is about purpose, belonging, and knowing that your contributions matter.

Steven’s new role reflects this key outcome. His position aligns with his strengths and interests, provides fair compensation, and gives him the opportunity to be part of a team that values what he brings to the workplace.

At Vista Lab, Steven is no longer just preparing for employment—he is employed.

Every packaged shipment, every completed task, and every successful workday reinforces his place as a valued member of the workforce. His job provides the structure, independence, and sense of accomplishment that meaningful employment can offer.

Just as importantly, it provides a pathway forward.

Celebrating a Milestone—and Looking Ahead

Steven’s hiring represents more than an individual success story. It demonstrates the impact of CBS’s employment continuum—from skill-building and workplace preparation through competitive employment and long-term career support.
